Top 5 Warning Signs That Indicate a Career Change Might Be Necessary

Have you been feeling stuck in your current job? Have you wondered what your life might be like in a different role? Do you feel somewhat unsatisfied with what you're currently doing?

It's quite normal to have off days from time to time. You may have just wrapped up a tedious project and feel completely wiped out. You may have heard that there will be changes to company policy, and you might now be required to be in the office more days of the week. Anything that triggers our emotions can easily lead us to dwell on them and set us in an overthinking spiral. These aren't always alarming signs, but rather one-offs that make us put things in perspective.

Perhaps you're not ecstatic about the company policy changes, but you love what you do, you have a good salary and job security, you enjoy working with your colleagues, you have a good work-life balance, and your commute to the office is short and easy. Putting one negative aspect in the grand scheme of things reveals that it's not all that bad, and perhaps not worth leaving your job over if everything else seems good.

However, if you find yourself asking the questions I started with on an ongoing basis, it might be time to consider moving on.

Here are my biggest red flags that suggest it's time to think about a career change and start job hunting:

1. Lack of Growth Opportunities

Imagine you’ve been working as a marketing coordinator for several years, but despite your best efforts, there’s no clear path to move up to a marketing manager role. You’ve taken on extra projects, shown your leadership skills, worked longer hours, and consistently received positive feedback in your performance reviews, yet promotions are given based on tenure rather than merit.

A job should be a platform for continuous learning and advancement. If you find yourself doing the same tasks with little variation or challenge, and if you’re no longer learning new skills, it’s a sign that your current position may not offer the growth you need to reach your full potential.

A job should feel like an ongoing journey, not a dead end.

2. Poor Work-Life Imbalance

If you’re regularly logging in 12-hour days and your work emails are the last thing you see before bed and the first thing you check in the morning, it’s a sign of imbalance. This can lead to burnout and affect your personal relationships and health.

Work-life balance is crucial for long-term job satisfaction and well-being. If your job is encroaching on your personal time consistently, it’s worth considering a role that respects your time outside of work.

It’s essential to have a balance that allows you to recharge and enjoy life outside of work.

3. Constant Stress and Unhappiness

You dread going to work every morning, and the Sunday blues start on Saturday. You’re constantly under pressure to meet unrealistic targets, leading to chronic stress.

While some stress is normal, excessive stress can lead to serious health issues, including anxiety and depression. If your job is a constant source of negative emotions, it’s a strong indicator that the environment is toxic and it’s time to move on.

If you’re unhappy more often than not, it’s a clear signal that something needs to change.

4. Misalignment with Company Values

Let's say you’re deeply committed to ethical sourcing and fair trade, but you discover that your company sources materials from suppliers with questionable labor practices. This disparity between your ethical standards and the company’s supply chain decisions could create a significant internal conflict.

If your personal values clash with the company’s values, or if you’re uncomfortable with the company culture, it can lead to dissatisfaction and ethical dilemmas.

It’s important to find a workplace where you can stand behind the company’s mission and practices.

5. Lack of Recognition or Compensation

Despite consistently exceeding your sales targets, your salary hasn’t changed in years, and your contributions are often overlooked during team meetings.

Recognition and fair compensation are key motivators. If you’re not feeling valued, or if your salary isn’t keeping up with the market rate for your role, it’s a sign that your talents might be better appreciated elsewhere.

If you’re feeling undervalued or being underpaid is demotivating, it may be time to look for an employer who will value what you bring to the table.

Conclusion

These red flags are not just minor grievances; they are significant indicators that your current job may not be the best fit for you in the long run. Paying attention to these signs can save you from staying in an unfulfilling position and guide you towards a more rewarding career path.

Don’t ignore the red flags. Your career should be fulfilling and contribute to your personal growth. If these signs resonate with you, it might be time to polish your resume and explore new opportunities.
